Project News: Genrec Engineering spins into Mauritius

Genrec Engineering has just completed their first major design and construction project on the island of Mauritius. The CMT Spinning Mill was finished in September 2004 and the inauguration is planned for 11 November 2004. As the island experiences tropical cyclones, the engineering and construction designs were required to meet cyclonic wind conditions. Genrec Engineering was involved with the design, engineering, shop drawings, detailing, procurement, fabrication, corrosion protection, shipping and erection of the project.

The initial project demanded 900 tons of structural steel, which doubled in a few months. The speed at which the project was done and the excellent cost efficiencies by Genrec Engineering meant that the client was able to double his requirements.

All in all 1800 tons of structural steel was procured in South Africa and fabricated at the Genrec Engineering, Wadeville works. A small site fabrication operation was set-up on the island to do the balance of the fabrication requirements, which was supervised by Doug Schultz, the site project manager.

Genrec Engineering also supplied and installed 33 000 square metres of roofing and cladding, which was profiled on site to lengths of up to 40 metres.

Despite the increased scope, Genrec Engineering and the client were both able to maximise their returns, as Genrec Engineering had the systems and infrastructure to fast track the increased tonnage and provide a solution that allowed the continued operation of the spinning mill while construction was in progress. The project was completed timeously and ahead of budget expectations.

The total value of the spinning mill is R600 million. It will provide employment to many of the unemployed on the island of Mauritius.
